Alumni Mentor Participation

Personal Information

We strongly believe that our students can benefit from the personal experiences of our alumni as UCLA School of Law students and professionals. We invite our alumni to mentor new UCLA law students through the Alumni Mentor Program. The program matches first year students with professionals who act as role models and are available to share information with students on topics ranging from insights into practice area and profession to interviewing and networking skills. In past years, more than 200 mentors were matched with students and many of those mentors return to the program year after year, saying "It was a great experience. I found it was a two-way street, i.e., I learned things from my mentee as well as sharing my experiences with her;" "it's always refreshing, after having practiced law for a few years, to meet someone who is still enthusiastic about the prospect of a legal career;" and "I definitely want to participate next year."

The Alumni-Mentor program begins in the spring, when the entering first year class is given the option of participating, on a first-come, first-served basis. A student who has an interest in a particular area of law, geographic area, academic pursuit or other special interest will be matched with an alumni mentor with such a background. To facilitate the initial meeting between mentors and their students, the school hosts a Kick-Off Reception in the spring. Throughout the year, the students and alumni are encouraged to communicate by telephone, e-mail, or, if practical, in person; some mentors in the past enjoyed bringing their mentees to their offices, to alumni events and to court hearings. While we do recommend that the students and alumni have at least three or four meetings of one type or another during the school year, there is no set requirement. Mentors may give as much time and effort to the program as they wish. We encourage you to participate in this Alumni-Mentor Program and ask that you take a few moments to sign up and complete the form.
